Bateman’s Tower
- Bateman’s Tower
- Bateman’s Tower was built by John Bateman in 1883 at the entrance to Brightlingsea Creek. Originally intended as a folly to help his daughter recover from consumption, it was used as an observation post during the Second World War, which required that its roof was removed. That was finally replaced in 2005. It is listing slightly, as its construction consists of plastered cement blocks that have been built on a raft. According to the register of British listed buildings, it may have had a secondary intended purpose as a lighthouse, but when plans to extend the port didn’t materialise this plan didn’t come to fruition, either.
