Supports beneath Clacton Pier

  • Supports beneath Clacton Pier
  • Clacton Pier opened on 27 July 1871. It was originally 150m long (extended to 360m in 1893) and 3.7m wide, and constructed of wood on concrete piles. It was formerly a docking point for steamers bringing tourists and day trippers to the resort. It was deliberately broken during the Second World War to stop it being used as a landing point by invading forces. It was also damaged by a sea mine. It has been damaged in other ways over the years. In 1973 its roller coaster was damaged by fire; in 1978 it was damaged by a storm, and in 2013 its helter skelter collapsed in a storm on 28 June. This was resurrected the following year.
