Hadleigh Castle on its hill

  • Hadleigh Castle on its hill
  • Hadleigh Castle was built by Hubert de Burgh in 1215, during the reign of Henry III. It was extended by Edward III during the Hundred Years War against the French, as a means of defending the Thames. The refurbishment was completed in 1370, although Edward’s successors largely left the castle to fall into disrepair and parts of it were demolished and sold off as building materials. What remains of it is now a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument.
